Dutch Reformed Church (1655)

This beautiful Gothic church located in the centre of De Rijp is famous for its 23 stained glass windows. The main floor is almost entirely of tombstones, a unique collection of monuments in itself. Here are to be found the gravestones of such well-known citizens of De Rijp as Jan Boon and his wife Trijntje Lakeman. Worth noting are the ornate church organ, wood carvings and model ship of a 'haringbuis' the type of boat used for centuries of herring fishing. More detailed information about the stained glass windows is at the website of Dutch Reformed Church and the church glasstained windows.
Just outside the main entrance to the church is the bronze statue of Jan Janszn. Weltevree. This famous seafarer from De Rijp was the first European ever to work at he court of the Emperor of Korea. Shipwrecked and washed ashore in Korea in 1626, he would spend the rest of his life in the services of the Korean Emperor. Known in Korea as "Pak Yong" there is a similar statue of Jan Janszn. Weltevree in Seoul today.
